It was a day in the month of February in the year 1982. Still Sri Lankans had never experienced the television or the Audio Visual media. But on this day a new birth came in to being under the Ministry of Plan Implementation. The name of the new arrival was “selacine” and the mother or the founder of Selacine was Dr. Wickrama Weerasooriya, former Secretary to the Ministry of Plan Implementation. Mr. G.H.K. Rathnasiri , a famous television producer and a director took care of the new born as the first Chief Executive Director.

The first step taken by Selacine was to produce news items for the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation. As the 1st state owned production house in Sri Lanka, Selacine had to perform it’s talents in a wide range of areas in the audio-visual world. Such as documentaries, docu dramas, tele dramas, Multi camera productions, discussion programmes, commercial programmes and television advertisements also were included. Selacine was able to show it’s optimum talents creatively in these areas through documentaries like “ Berawatha” and “Wanawatha”, tele drama like “Jeewitha Rodaya” which are some of the creations ever lasting in the Sri Lankan hearts
